GREETINGS GIRLIES! It’s Rachael again with a DIY! WINTER IS COMING so OBVS I had to go with a very wintery experiment this time! LURV. I’m all about those winter vibes – sweaters, hot coco, SNOW, YAS PLEASE! So today we’ll be doing a Melting Glitter Snowman (because of COURSE GLITTER). It’s way too cute, even my pet robot Pixie was in LURV with this little guy…until it melted. Check out Pixie’s post HERE to hear all about THAT adventure! 😀

So let’s BLAST OFF with this DIY:

 meltingsnowman_science_rachael_stellogirls_materialsStep 1:

2 packs of baking soda

Water

A big tin / casserole dish

Black beads (for the eyes)
Orange foam cut into long triangles (for the nose)

Glitter (OBVS)

Step 2:

Vinegar

Glitter

Snowflakes (optional, for decorations)

STEP 1:

Pour the 2 packs of baking soda and some glitter in a bowl and add water. Just add a little at first and mix it. It should be packable but not too watery. If you can roll a ball, that doesn’t crumble, it’s the right consistency!

Now roll as many balls as you wish and make little snowman by placing one ball on top of the other! You can make 1 or 2 or 100, whatever you desire! Add your noses and eyeballs.

Now set your scene in the casserole dish (it’s important you don’t do this on a flat plate because it’ll get a bit messy!). You can add snowflakes, add some glitter (and then even MORE glitter), even a little background out of some nice paper. Do WHATEVER you want!!

STEP 2: Pour a bit of vinegar on top of your snowman… and see what happens! You can keep adding vinegar until the BUBBLING stops.

CRAY CRAY RIGHT?!

Allow me to explain WHY this happens!

Sodium bicarbonate is the chemical name for baking soda (NaHCO3 ) this means it’s made of one sodium atom, one hydrogen atom, one carbon atom, and three oxygen atoms. Vinegar is a mixture of water and acetic acid. Chemical name: dilute acetic acid (HCH3COO). Vinegar is an acid, baking soda a base. An acid is a chemical that wants to get rid of a proton. A base is a chemical that wants a proton. When you mix an acid with a base AMAZING things can happen, as you’ll see in this experiment!

OK, enough science talk! Can’t wait to see all your Melting Snowmen! Tag #StelloGirls in your posts so we can SEE YOUR CREATIONS!

XOXO Rachael
