Aloha babes!!! It’s Alissa here! I just HAVE to talk about how important Chrissy Teigen is to me!! I LURV her! She’s the actual KWEEN of the internet, shutting down trolls left and right, and somehow simultaneously the most RELATABLE person and an actual MAGICAL UNICORN!

Chrissy is KNOWN for speaking her mind and shooting from the hip which is one of the MAIN reasons why I LURV her! She’s also on the cover of Glamour’s April issue and she has written this INCREDIBLE essay about having postpartum depression. It’s honest, raw, and beautiful – just like Chrissy.

#flashbackfriday 💕

I LOVE that she opened up about this! Postpartum depression affects one in NINE women and yet NOBODY wants to talk about it! Part of that comes from the fear of being called “whiny” or “selfish”, as Chrissy puts it:

“I also just didn’t think it could happen to me. I have a great life. I have all the help I could need: John, my mother (who lives with us), a nanny. But postpartum does not discriminate. I couldn’t control it. And that’s part of the reason it took me so long to speak up: I felt selfish, icky, and weird saying aloud that I’m struggling. Sometimes I still do.”

She also explains WHY she needed to write this letter:

“I’m speaking up now because I want people to know it can happen to anybody and I don’t want people who have it to feel embarrassed or to feel alone. I also don’t want to pretend like I know everything about postpartum depression, because it can be different for everybody. But one thing I do know is that—for me—just merely being open about it helps.”

And she’s so right! There is ZERO reason to feel embarrassed or alone when it comes to depression and other mental health issues. It can affect anyone and everyone, and we shouldn’t be scared to talk about it because it only makes things worse.

Thankfully now Chrissy is already on her path back to herself! She’s taking antidepressants and seeing a therapist and SHARING HER EXPERIENCE! As someone who has struggled with anxiety and depression before, this letter really means a lot to me.

One thing that stood out the most was how supportive Chrissy’s husband, John Legend (HEARD OF HIM?) has been while helping her through PPD.

“I’m grateful for the people around me. John has been incredible over the last nine months, bringing me my medicine and watching horrible reality TV with me. He is not the goofiest guy, but he has gone out of his way to indulge my sense of humor. When I was having a good day, he would go to Medieval Times with me and put on the crazy period hat! He sees how much my eyes light up when he does that stuff, and he knows that’s what I need. I know he must look over at times and think: My God, get it together. But he has never made me feel that way. He wants me to be happy, silly, and energetic again, but he’s not making me feel bad when I’m not in that place.”

Having that support from your family and friends can make such a huge difference, but they don’t always know what you need or that you even NEED support because again…NOBODY WANTS TO TALK ABOUT IT! When we as a society get to talk about these issues it not only helps those of us with mental illnesses but informs everyone else on what we go through and what we need to get better!

That is why this is important. Not only because this high profile, beautiful, sassy woman has shared her experience but because in doing so she’s encouraged SO MANY WOMEN to talk about their experiences as well! Already so many of her fans have mentioned that just by talking about this they already feel less alone and more in control of their depression.

Headed to Beauty and the Beast! @laurapolko @allanface @monicarosestyle ❤
